February 10, 2016 | Steppin' Up Physical Therapy
Topic: Physical Therapy is a Misnomer
Join Jason Hazelett, PT, DPT with Steppin' Up Physical Therapy as he discusses back pain. The general public thinks that when a person is referred to a physical therapist, they will be guided through excercises. While it is true that
exercises will be a portion of a person's rehabilitation, there are many cases in which exercise is never even prescribed for the first three or six sessions.
The general public should not be fearful of physical therapy, thinking that they have not historically been fit or an athletic person and are averse to exercise. If they are being referred for pain or certain dysfunctions, often it requires the physical therapist to do very specific manual interventions to remedy the situation. Postural retraining and some exercise may then follow to maintain what the patient has gained. Frequent exercise is not required to be healthy. This
is a common misunderstanding and is even promoted within the medical community. Movement, on the other hand, is required.
