Event Description

March 27, 2014 Updated Mar 28, 2014 at 6:59 AM EST

As part of the City's effort to improve the quality of our three rivers and the streams that feed them, City Utilities encourages home owners, businesses and institutions build rain gardens. We'll show you how!

A rain garden is a landscaped area that holds rain water runoff for a few hours to a few days. Rain gardens are planted with native plants that help the soil soak up more water. These plants may improve the quality of the water that does runoff.

Looking for Rain Garden Plants? Fort Wayne City Utilities has teamed with a business that is selling locally grown, native perennial plants. Riverview Nursery will hold a native plant/rain garden plant sale on May 24, 2014 at Salomon Park in Fort Wayne with free refreshments and give-aways. Details coing soon.

Again in 2014 City Utilities is offering workshops to show you how to plant a rain garden. If you've already been through a workshop, we're also offering a short "refresher class" with a focus on selecting and using native plants.

For 2014, City Utilities is offering something NEW -- two kinds of workshops.

Workshop Type A is a 3-hour workshop that includes everything you need to know to create a rain garden on your property including: sizing, shaping, location, routing water to the garden, construction, plant selectiona nd maintenance.

Workshop Type B is a 2-hour "refresher" course for those of you who may have attended a rain garden workshop in the past or who may already have a rain garden. These workshops are also open to you if you have not previously attended a workshop. This workshop includes on-hour of rain garden basics with the second hour focusing on selecting and using native plants.

Rain Garden How-To Workshops are offered at no cost. However, we do ask that you register in advance by calling (260) 427-1381.
