Allen County’s Aboite Township Fire Department (ATFD) will be hosting its first-ever Public Safety Day on Saturday, May 15, 2010. This family-friendly event will occur from 9:00 PM through 2:00 PM at ATFD Station #1, located at 11321 Aboite Center Road, next to Homestead High School and the Homestead Freshman Academy.

Attendance to this event is free and open to everyone in northeast Indiana. Its focus is to provide area families with timely, easily useful common-sense information about safety, be it for home, school, automotive or workplace safety. While it will be hosted by the Aboite Township Fire Department, various agencies from northeast Indiana will be on hand providing free information, educational opportunities and more. Among those scheduled to be part of this event are:

The Indiana State Police will offer DNA kits and more for kids & parents.
The Lutheran Hospital Safe Kids Program will be offering free child car seat inspections and safety tips.
The American Red Cross will be there with their Emergency Response Vehicle as well as information about emergency preparedness for individuals and families.
The United States Department of Defense outreach center located in the Allen County Public Safety Academy will be in-site demonstrating military technology including robots that can and are being adapted for use by civilian emergency responders.
Search and Recovery K-9s will be on hand demonstrating how they work different scenarios in conjunction with local first responders.
The Aboite Township Fire Department will be conducting home safety workshops in a special mobile Fire Safety House for kids & parents as well as how they can make plans and create their own escape drills in the event that fire, severe weather or other disasters may strike.
The Lutheran Air helicopter will fly in and land at this event (weather and conditions permitting) allowing an up-close look at this area’s newest air ambulance service.
Local representatives of The New York Life Insurance Company will be on hand with free photo ID kits for kids and more information for parents.

In addition, there will be an area-wide Apparatus Display located at the Homestead High School Bud parking lot on Aboite Center Road featuring fire, police, EMS and other emergency response vehicles & equipment from around northeast Indiana. The ATFD’s “Firehouse Dogs” will also being on hand serving hot dogs and drinks beginning at 11:00am.
