In November, After Dark, Fort Wayne’s super fabulous premiere night spot, will celebrate owner Leo Vodde’s 30 years of serving up cocktails and entertainment for Fort Wayne’s gay and straight communities. The 1st week in November will be marked by special events culminating with a trio of drag show performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, Nov. 3rd through the 5th. Performers from around the Midwest will gather to perform and pay homage to this quiet, determined business pioneer.
Leo began his career on Nov 2, 1981, purchasing Up the Street, a bar on Main Street. A lot has changed over the past three decades. In the past, merely operating a “Gay Bar’ brought pressure from official and unofficial sources. Today, operating a primarily gay establishment has emerged from the underground in Fort Wayne, due largely to Leo’s efforts and his quiet, business-focused determination.
Leo’s establishments have supported benefits that brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities including the St Mary’s Soup Kitchen, Community Harvest Food Bank and numerous benefits for HIV/AIDS efforts. Supporting those in need became a personal mission for Leo over the years.
