In a faded dime store in the tiny, dried up West Texas town of McCarthy, the "Disciples of James Dean" gather for their 20th anniversary reunion. Now in their 30s, they were teenagers when Dean filmed Giant in nearby Marfa. One of them, an extra in the film, has a child whom she says was conceived with Dean during the shoot. The group’s congenial reminiscences mingle with flashbacks to their youth; then the arrival of a stunning but familiar stranger sets off a series of confrontations that smash their delusions and expose bitter disappointments. Through a mixture of humor and pathos, Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean delves into the emotional core of the play’s characters as they discover who they were, what they’ve lost, and who they are. Contains adult language and subject matter.
Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean was previously produced at IPFW in September 1983.
In commemorating IPFW’s 50th Celebration, the Department of Theatre looks back at some past favorites and looks forward to new horizons. This season we present four productions that embrace the concepts of memory, dreams, and self-realization, along with a bonus fifth production: a new staging of The Imaginary Invalid, the very first play produced at IPFW.
