The Portland Center is located at 131 East Walnut Street, Portland, IN. For more information about this exhibit contact Kimberly Anderson, Visual Arts Director at 260-726-4809.
McPherson is from Morrisville, New York. He studied art at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute in Utica and at Syracuse University before going to the Academy of Art University of San Francisco. After college, he freelanced in the Bay Area for several years teaching youth arts and painting theater sets before moving to Ohio University to get his MFA. McPherson then spent two years teaching community classes in Albany, New York where he met his wife and promptly returned to Ohio in 2014 in pursuit of his wife’s PhD.
McPherson currently lives and works in Bowling Green, Ohio. In an artist statement, McPherson says “I am interested in realities; the solidity of materials, and the realness of currencies. I have been using spaces that appear shallow, skewed, or shattered by patterns to create a sense of skepticism and unease. . I am particularly drawn to the idea of un-portraits: things that convey power by their conventional presentation, but which are eroded by the denial of a clear identity. I hope to discover something through this work about the structure of power as it is presented pictorially.”
