The Portland Center of Arts Place is located at 131 East Walnut Street, Portland, Indiana 47371. Julia Wickes grew up in the small town of Bedford, Indiana where her passion for art really began. Wickes says that during the 1950’s she spent long summer nights sitting on her front porch talking with her grandmother and studying the people that strolled by.
Wickes says her passion for the arts started with the discovery of Vincent Van Gogh and Walker Evans. Van Gogh painted what and who he saw everyday while Evans photographed people living their everyday lives.
Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Wickes has a reputation for her expressive portraits and landscapes. She says she is inspired by the narrative of daily life, and travels the world searching for subjects everywhere she goes.
In 1971, Wickes received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She taught at an Indianapolis elementary school for five years before opening her own graphic designs studio. In 1998 she studied art at the Pont Aven School of Art in Pont Aven, France. In 2002, she graduated from The Herron School of Art at Indiana University with a major in painting and a minor in art history. While attending school there, she received an honorable mention from the student art exhibition. Most recently, in 2010, she won a 1st place cash award from the Indiana Downtown Artists and Dealers Association annual show in Chicago, Illinois. Upon her graduation, Wickes opened a fine arts studio in Indianapolis where she currently teaches private and interactive painting workshops.
