Want to help a great cause? Special Olympics of Allen County is hosting its 6th annual Polar Plunge on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Parkview Field concourse. Those brave enough to take the plunge will climb the platform and jump into a new unused bin donated by Republic Services. The bin will be filled with 8 feet of ice cold water thanks to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.
The money raised will help buy uniforms, equipment, and pay for facility rentals to participate in the state summer games at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, June 7-9, 2012. To take the plunge, participants must raise a minimum of $75, or $50 for students with an ID. Groups and individuals may register online at soindiana.org.
“It’s a crazy fundraiser,” Julia Fiechter, Fundraising and Event Coordinator, said. “But that’s kind of the point of the plunge. It takes courage to get in and it takes courage to get out. And it takes courage for our athletes’ to learn new skills and compete.”
Registration begins at 10a.m., opening ceremony begins at 11:45a.m. and the plunge begins at noon. There will be a family friendly After Splash Bash immediately following the plunge in the Lincoln Event Center with music and a cash bar. Contact Julia Fiechter at 403-2005 or JuliaFiechter@aol.com with any questions about the event.
