Fort Wayne area music lovers will have a special treat on November 3 when the choir at Trinity Episcopal Church will join with professionals in the music community to present Howard Goodall’s “Eternal Light: A Requiem”.
The 10 a.m. performance will be incorporated into the liturgy for All Saints Day during the service at the historic church, located at 611 West Berry Street.
According to Wayne Peterson, Trinity’s music director, this is the first time this particular work of Goodall will be heard in Fort Wayne. The composer is perhaps best known for the theme to the British comedy hit “The Vicar of Dibley”. Goodall based his theme for that program on a setting of Psalm 23 that was performed by the choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, England. He has also composed theme music for “Mr. Bean”. Goodall won a Primetime Emmy for Original Dramatic Score in 2009 for the theme to HBO’s “Into the Storm”.
Peterson, who along with Trinity provides a music program for homeschooled and other interested youth, said the music for Nov. 3 could be a good introduction to classical music for those parents wishing to expose their children to the genre.
“The work is very accessible and has appeal to a contemporary audience. The music is beautiful and is on the lighter side of the classical vein,” Peterson said.
Vocal soloists for the work will be Elizabeth Piercy, Alin Cass and Daniel Albers.
Piercy recently played the lead in the Fort Wayne Civic Theater’s production of “Cinderella” She began her performance career at age five and has worked with Celebrity Cruises and Walt Disney Entertainment. She has appeared in more than 25 local productions.
Cass has been a professional church musician for the past 10 years and performs as a soloist and in musical theater throughout northern Indiana.
Fort Wayne native Albers has studied with Dr. Joseph and Violette Meyers and has performed with University Singers, Opera Workshop, and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Chorus. He and Cass both are members of the Heartland Chorale.
“Eternal Light” is a requiem or mass for the dead. The liturgy of All Saints Day typically remembers everyone who has gone before. According to an article by Ryan Hamm for Relevant Magazine, All Saints Day is “a reason to celebrate what God has done through people, and how the ‘great cloud of witnesses’ is both wider and deeper than we might think.”
