At Canterbury School’s Spring Book Fair, visitors can chat with award-winning authors, a prima ballerina, and a Brazilian chef. Open to the public, the book fair runs Tuesday through Thursday, April 22-24. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily at Canterbury Lower School, 5601 Covington Road, Fort Wayne.

Canterbury’s Spring Book Fair, the only one of its kind in the area, is a marketplace of books, fine arts, artists, and authors. It features thousands of hand-selected quality books for students and adults, plus original artwork from favorite local artists. Gallery Guests, on hand daily, create a lively atmosphere. This year’s guests include local authors Helen Frost, Karen Flesch, Claire Ewart, Cynthia Presser, Carol Butler, Teresa Yarbrough, Holly Mishler, David Long, Susan Braun, Marcia Crawford, Bonnie Manning, and Suzanne Rogers, Other guests include Lucia Rogers, principal dancer of Fort Wayne Ballet, Ted Rice, Byron Lamm, Steve Presser, Laura Semba and Betsy Gephart. Artwork by Vicki Junk-Wright, local artist and Canterbury High School art teacher, and Jane Berner, Canterbury Early Childhood teacher will be for sale.

More than 35 categories, including specialized books for each grade level from Kindergarten through Middle school, are selected by parent volunteers, school librarians and teachers.

“We have everything from cookbooks to classics,” said Chris Collins, parent and head of the book fair’s selection committee. “It is a marketplace atmosphere, fun for all ages to browse for books and meet the authors.”

“The authors are excited to participate, and we hope many teens, parents and aspiring authors will join us to meet some of Indiana’s finest writers in person,” said Laurie Gray, parent, author and book fair steering committee member.

One of those authors is Helen Frost, an award-winning poet, playwright, and children’s writer. She will talk about her new novel Salt, a story set in Fort Wayne during the War of 1812. Her novel-in-poem, Keesha’s House, won the Michael L. Printz honor from the American Library Association, and Hidden was chosen as a 2012 Honor Book for the Lee B. Hopkins Poetry Award. Two books, Diamond Willow and Crossing Stones, were selected as Best Books of Indiana. All of her books will be available for sale at the book fair.

“Planning for the book fair began last fall when a committee of parents and teachers researched and selected all of the books,” said Helen Burkart Presser, Canterbury Lower School librarian, author, and book fair coordinator. Volunteers also plan an informal Bistro Lunch during the book fair. “The lunch is a favorite among parents because it features a panel of experts discussing quality literature recommendations for specific grade levels,” said Presser. The lunch is held in the Canterbury Lower School Commons on Wednesday, April 23, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost for the lunch is $10, and the deadline to register is April 17. All events are open to the public.
