Location: Memorial Coliseum
The Fort Wayne Derby Girls are bringing the world of roller derby to Fort Wayne for the sixth annual Spring Roll Tournament. The three-day event takes place from May 15th-17th 2015 at the Memorial Coliseum and will host 22 roller derby teams that include women and men’s teams. We have teams from Canada (Calgary, AB, Toronto, ON, Waterloo Region, ON) along with several teams from all over the United States such as Texas, Missouri, New Jersey, South Carolina, Iowa, Florida that will be competing this year, as well as several of the highest-ranking teams in the world.
Modern-day roller derby has grown and developed dramatically since its' 2003 revival into a genuine athletic competition complete with well-defined rules, divisions, tournaments, and governing bodies such as: the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and the Men's Roller Derby Association (MRDA). Athleticism, skill, and strategy are what win on the track and Spring Roll has it at every level.
Teams at Spring Roll will play others in the same ranking bracket with the hopes of increasing their rankings on an international level. The variety of teams ranges from the very local (Fort Wayne Derby Girls), to the regional (Race City Rebels, Killamazoo Derby Darlins, Cincinnati Battering Rams, Chicago Outfit, Naptown Roller Girls, Chicago Bruise Brothers), national (Your Mom Men’s Derby, St. Louis Gate Keepers, Texas Mens Roller Derby, Magic City Misfits, Carolina Wrecking Balls, Jersey Boys Roller Derby, Rock City Riot, Sioux City Kornstalkers, Arch Rival Roller Girls, Brewcity Bruisers, Dallas Derby Devils, Kansas City Roller Warriors, Old Capitol City Roller Girls), and international (Canada’s Toronto Roller Derby, Tri-City Roller Derby, Calgary Roller Derby Association).
Please visit Spring Roll’s website or Facebook page for a full posting of teams and schedules. https://www.facebook.com/#!/FWSpringRoll or http://fortwaynespringroll.com/
The Spring Roll committee expects even higher attendance than last year because of the rapid growth of the sport, especially for MRDA and the increasing popularity of the tournament compared to similar tournaments around the country. More than 1,800 skaters, fans, and volunteers are expected to attend. Based on this estimate, we could see an economic impact of at least $250,000 to filter into our local community.
Daily and weekend tickets are available for $15-$50 at ticketmaster.com. On Saturday night $12 gets you in the door after 4:30pm to see the Fort Wayne Derby Girls vs. Naptown Roller Girls at 7pm and the Race City Rebels (Men’s league from Indy) vs. Sioux City at 5pm.
The event will have good food and PBR as well as local and regional merchandise vendors. There are also still opportunities for sponsors, vendors, and volunteers. Visit http://fortwaynespringroll.com/ or contact Last Call at email@example.com for more information.
