Residents urged to support Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive May 9
The food drive is set for Saturday, May 9; residents are asked to leave a bag of non-perishable food by their mailboxes for pickup by their letter carriers.
Note that he or she will be delivering and collecting mail as usual, on top of collecting food donations, so that pickup time could be slightly later than usual.
The food drive will benefit Associated Churches Neighborhood Food Network and other local food pantries, again this year. The Associated Churches Neighborhood Food Network operates 26 pantries throughout the community and distributed more than 710,000 pounds of food in 2014, a 19 percent increase over the previous year.
2015 marks the 23rd annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger. The one-day drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. Carriers last year collected a record 70.2 million pounds of food donations along their postal routes. Last year in the Fort Wayne-area, letter carriers, schools and residents contributed more than 530,000 pounds of food—more than any other Indiana community.
People who have questions about the drive in their area should ask their letter carrier, contact their local post office, or go to nalc.org/food, facebook.com/StampOutHunger or twitter.com/StampOutHunger (hashtag #StampOutHunger).
