Seniors and others should mark their calendars for a day of free food, fun, education and reduced-cost health care.
The bi-annual Senior Citizens EXPO and Health-Fair will be held Thursday, April 14th, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the National Military History Center, 5634 C.R. 11A in Auburn. The event starts with a free breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. courtesy of Smith Farms Manor. Lunch from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. will also be provided free of charge by the Laurels of DeKalb. The Heimach Popcorn Wagon will be available throughout the day and Starbucks Coffee Company will be serving samples of their coffee.
There will be dozens of booths with services and products of interest to seniors, their families and support help and literally everyone in attendance.
DeKalb Memorial Hospital is once again coordinating a health fair (8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.) for all adults. Also for seniors 60 & over, some vouchers will be available for free health screenings courtesy of Aging & In-Home Services also from 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. Vouchers will be given on a first come, first served basis. Test results will be sent to the patient and his or her physician (if indicated on your consent form) within a week. Call 925-2518 for more information regarding the tests.
The following options are the laboratory tests offered by the hospital during the health fair:
General Health Panel - $21.50 This test screens for diabetes, liver and kidney functions. This test requires a 12-hour fast. NO food or drink other than water or black coffee for 12 hours preceding your blood draw.
Lipid Panel - $8.00 A Lipid Panel shows your total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL and Triglycerides. This test DOES require a 12-hour fast – NO food or drink other than water or black coffee for 12 hours preceding your blood draw.
A1C - $22.00 The A1C is used to monitor patients with diabetes. It shows the fluctuation of an individual’s blood glucose over a 3-month time frame. This test does NOT require any fasting.
PSA - $25.75 A PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test is to detect high levels of PSA that may indicate an increased risk for prostate cancer. This test is for MEN only and does NOT require any fasting.
Francine’s Friends Mobile Mammography in partnership with Parkview Regional Cancer Center will conduct mammograms on-site from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The screening takes approximately 15 minutes. The company accepts Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance. Funding is also available for those without insurance and the inability to pay. Call (800) 727-8439 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are accepted if openings are available.
Massage Therapist, Steve Grogg, will offer mini-massages. Sharon Coe, Certified Yoga Teacher, will give yoga demonstrations from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Entertainment, 11:30 – the World Champion ‘Voices of Unity’ Choir.
TRIAD will be on hand for medication disposal. Those who attend can bring their expired or unused medications to the event for disposal.
Trude Myers, owner/operator of an antique shop, The Blue Fruit Jar in Butler, will give free antique appraisals during the entire event.
Jim Littlejohn and Jama Littlejohn Smith, from Littlejohn Auction & Realty, will emcee the event plus conduct a mini-auction at the conclusion of the expo. Included among the items available for auction will be a ‘like new’ motorized wheelchair, a beautiful organ, a primitive folding table, a picture by well-known area artist, Nina Bennett from Expression’s Gallery plus many other valuable items.
Jim and Jama will also be announcing the winners of awesome door prizes all through the event.
