Event Description

March 25, 2013 Updated Mar 25, 2013 at 1:12 PM EDT

Youtheatre's spring show "Anansi the Spider" will be a multimedia extravaganza incorporating large scale puppets (ala Lion King), 65 actors and dancers and the JenBe Drum ensemble from the Three Rivers Institute of African Arts and Culture.
Follow the clever and mischievious Anansi as he triumphs over his foes in this whimsical collection of West African Folk Tales. This is a special collaboration with the West African Drums of TRIACC and master puppeteer, Barney Thompson. Meet our nine foot elephant, and find out how he got his trunk. How does Spider get a small waist? A bald head? Join our storyteller (the JEL’I) as played by popular community actor, Dwight Wilson and take a fun trip to the savannah and forests of West Africa!

April 19 @7pm
April 20 @2pm

This is part of a year long Arts In Education project with Weisser Park and Master Puppeteer, Barney Thompson. Students have helped in the construction of a six foot mechanical spider, and a nine foot Elephant! This collection of African Folk Tales has been adapted by Youtheatre Director Leslie Hormann and features the stories, the music, the costumes, and the scenery of West Africa! Our storyteller is Dwight Wilson, recently the star of "Dreamgirls!"

Don't miss this incredible, very visual theatre experience!
