Event Description

July 16, 2015 Updated Jul 16, 2015 at 7:48 AM EDT

Over the years thousands of people have joined TekVenture at the Downtown Allen County Public Library (ACPL) to celebrate Rube Goldberg and all things made of funky contraptions. This Saturday, July 18, 9am-noon, marks the 8th time TekVenture has invited teams to build machines or "links" in a true "community chain reaction" pitting teams against themselves and others in a variety of fun and quirky categories.

New to last year, the ACPL Children's Services Team stepped up to a bigger role in planning the event. They along with fabulous TekVenture volunteers such as Aaron Makin, Sara Harper, Casey Drudge, Leanne Mensing and others, decided to partner with Three Rivers Festival to bring families and young children a unique opportunity to pit themselves against their own imaginations.

The 2015 Chain Reaction Challenge is sponsored by Kelley Box & Packaging. It is now a three hour-long event that combines a how-to workshop with the actual challenge. While encouraged to bring their own materials for building, teams are also able to choose free materials for building their contraption from a "stock pile" at the event.

Families with children of all ages are invited to create a machine and enjoy the fun by building a contraption that fits on a full eight foot table. The machine starts with a golf ball rolling down a ramp and ends with a golf ball rolling down a ramp. Each contraption then starts the next contraption with a rolling golf ball and so on.

Never built a chain reaction machine before? No problem! Experienced machine builders and engineers will be on hand to help you every step of the way. We'll provide all the materials. All you have to do is show up and have fun.
