Event Description

April 25, 2013 Updated Apr 25, 2013 at 12:30 PM EST

The Lutheran Children’s Hospital Pediatric Diabetes Support Group and Novo Nordisk present “Diabetes Doesn’t Have to Slow You Down with IndyCar Driver Charlie Kimball,” Wednesday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m. in Kachmann Auditorium, 7910 W. Jefferson Blvd. The auditorium is located on the lower level of Medical Office Building Two on the Lutheran Hospital campus. The general public is invited to attend this free presentation. Media may join a special visit with Kimball and pediatric patients from Lutheran Children’s Hospital at 4:15 p.m. near the treehouse elevator in Lutheran’s main lobby.

Kimball will speak about how he has been able to manage his type 1 diabetes and fulfill his racing dream. Kimball is the first licensed driver with diabetes in the history of IndyCar and he is again expected to qualify for the upcoming Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 26.

Kimball began racing go-carts at the age of 9, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2007 and suspended his racing career that year to get a solid grasp on his health. After returning to racing the following year, Kimball claimed a podium finish in his first post-diagnosis race. Today, he competes in one of the most competitive racing circuits in the world, proving that living with type 1 diabetes does not restrict him from traveling at speeds of more than 200 mph and doing what he loves to do. Kimball’s message instills in children of all ages that type 1 diabetes, when properly managed, will not stop them either from reaching their dreams.

While racing, Kimball has an alarm that alerts him if his blood sugar is high or low. The alarm, developed by his sponsor Novo Nordisk, constantly monitors his blood sugar during races. Kimball has both water and orange juice in the car to respond accordingly to keep his blood sugar in check.

Kimball has competed as the driver of the #83 car for Novo Norkisk Chip Ganassi Racing in the IZOD IndyCar Series for the last two years and he scored six top-10s in 2012, besting his previous mark of two top-10s in 2011. Last season, he placed eighth in the Indianapolis 500. Kimball also scored a career-best finish of second in the Honda Indy Toronto on the Streets of Toronto.

LCH provides full-service support for pediatric patients with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, as well as those diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Pamela Thomas, MD, is the only pediatric endocrinologist practicing in northeastern Indiana. Patients are seen quarterly by Dr. Thomas, two certified diabetes educators, a registered dietitian, a social worker and ancillary staff.

In addition, regular support group activities are provided throughout the year and LCH routinely participates in the annual diabetes walks to raise awareness about the condition.
