After months of research, consulting with area professionals, analyzing service coverage gaps and a careful look at the talents within the organization, members elected to develop a program aimed at preparing families with young children for the first years of school, suitably named “First Things First.”
Nearly half of children in Allen County are beginning kindergarten unprepared to enter a school environment often resulting in long term delayed reading abilities. Children who have participated in high-quality pre-kindergarten programs demonstrate higher math and reading scores, stronger learning skills, increased creativity, better school attendance, improved health, and greater involvement by parents in elementary school.
The Junior League will host three more First Things First workshops this school year – Thursday, March 10th, Thursday April 14th and Thursday, May 12th at 6:00pm – and will resume in the fall after the school year begins.
All workshops, meals, activities and materials are free to participants and financially supported by Junior League of Fort Wayne fundraising efforts. Anyone with children from infants to kindergarten age are welcome to attend.
