Camp PossAbility’s “PossAbility Gala” on September 18th will raise money for Camp PossAbility and its operational expenses. Camp PossAbility is volunteer run, so monies raised will go directly toward helping our campers. Our fundraising event will include live jazz from the West Central Quartet, heavy hors d’oeuvres from Goeglein’s, performance art, mocktail bar, and live and silent auctions. It will be emceed by Curtis Smith, 21 Alive weatherman, and we will even have a presentation from the mayor of Fort Wayne.
Camp PossAbility, Inc., 501(c)3, is a new one week summer camp designed specifically for cognitively high functioning young adults ages 18 to 35 with physical disabilities. This is what makes Camp PossAbility unique because of the age and disabilities it serves.
There are multiple camps for children with disabilities, but most young adults age out at age 18 or 21. Many campers miss this safe, adapted environment where they can enjoy activities with friends. There is also a great need for this age group since many young adults are returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with physical disabilities. Camp PossAbility is designed to meet that need, to give young adults with physical disabilities a chance to relax, refresh, let their guard down, and fellowship in a place that is adapted just for them.
Camp PossAbility will run from August 2-7, 2015. Camp PossAbility is based in Fort Wayne but will be held at Bradford Woods in Martinsville, Indiana, an adaptive outdoor center owned by Indiana University, and Camp PossAbility will contract with them to rent space for a week. Because this camp is such a needed event, we have young people coming from across the country to attend. Our auction will help us raise needed funds for the 2016 camp week.
