The University of Saint Francis will offer public shows at the Edwin Clark Schouweiler Memorial Planetarium for two weekends during Fort Wayne’s Three Rivers Festival. The planetarium shows will be July 12-14 and July 19 and 20.
“Explorers of Mauna Kea” will be the fifth grade/adult planetarium Three Rivers Festival show.Viewers will travel to the big island of Hawaii and the tallest mountain in the world, Mauna Kea, home to one of the world’s largest collection of astronomical telescopes.
Against the backdrop of Hawaiian legend and lore, the show will introduce viewers to several of today’s cutting-edge astronomers, their instruments and recent discoveries relating to the expanding universe, comets and planets around other stars. Two live show segments will demonstrate new telescope technology and the importance of location for astronomical research.
The following shows will be offered:
Friday, July 12, 7 p.m.—“Explorers of Mauna Kea” (for fifth graders through adults)
Saturday, July 13, family matinee, 3:30 p.m.—“A Solar System Adventure Tour” (for students in grades 2-4 and their adult friends); 7 p.m.—“Explorers of Mauna Kea”
Sunday, July 14, family matinee, 3:30 p.m.—“Zubenelgenubi’s Magical Sky” (for students in pre-K to first grade and their adult friends); 7 p.m.—“Explorers of Mauna Kea”
Friday, July 19, family matinee, 3:30 p.m.—“A Solar System Adventure Tour”; 7 p.m.—“Explorers of Mauna Kea”
Saturday, July 20, family matinee, 3:30 p.m.—“Zubenelgenubi’s Magical Sky”
Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for children under 18 and $3 for senior citizens. The maximum charge is $14 per family. An additional $1 discount will be given to Fort Wayne Astronomical Society members and visitors with Three Rivers Festival buttons. Purchase tickets at the door.
The planetarium is located on the campus of the University of Saint Francis. Please enter off the Leesburg Road entrance on the east side of campus. The planetarium is in Achatz Hall. More information is available at sf.edu/planetarium or (260) 399-7700, ext. 8211.
