September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, and on September 1, 2012 we will be hosting a 5K Run/Walk at Shoaff Park to honor women who have been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in our community. At the beginning of the event we will have a guest speaker from the community.
Sponsors will have an opportunity to set up booths at the event. There will be fresh fruit, bagels, and drinks available for the runners and families. After the run we will have an award's ceremony for the top finishers. We will also be granting dreams to Ovarian Cancer survivors at the event.
The Debbie A. Johnston Foundation touches many lives in our community. Our volunteer network matches volunteers with Ovarian Cancer survivors to help with basic tasks during chemotherapy and other difficult times. These basic tasks include cooking, cleaning, laundry, lawn care, and snow removal.
Our dedication to volunteering in the community won us the Parkview Care Award in 2011. Our Live Your Dream program grants life-long dreams to survivors in our community. This month we granted a dream to a woman diagnosed with late stage Ovarian Cancer in Fort Wayne, who has two young children, and was recently told her chemotherapy is not working and she may not have much longer to live. She did not have enough money to take her family on one last vacation. Our foundation helped to fund her trip with her family in July.
At the event we will be granting several other dreams to Ovarian Cancer survivors in our community. We are expecting over 300 people at our event.
