The Farm at Prophetstown will be the corn husking capital of Indiana on Saturday and Sunday, October 17-18, as the Prophetstown State Park will host the Indiana and National Corn Husking Contest. The park is Indiana’s newest state park. Prophetstown is located where the Tippecanoe River meets the Wabash near the town of Battle Ground.
The Indiana Hand Corn Husking Contest will be held on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This contest is open to all who enjoy old-fashioned corn husking. Participants in the timed contest husk corn from one row, throwing the ears into a horse-drawn wagon. The corn is then weighted and inspected for excess husks. Classes vary from 10 to 20 minutes. The contests are open to both men and women of various age groups, from youth to Golden Agers. The cost is $20 per person to husk; spectators will be admitted at no charge. There is a Prophetstown State Park gate admission for all huskers and spectators.
Each state in the National Corn Husking Association (nine states) may send 36 participants to the national competition. The top three in each class qualifies for national competition. This year, Indiana is proud to host the National contest.
The Farm at Prophetstown is located in the Prophetstown State Park. Driving Directions: Take I-65 to exit number 178 which is State Road 43 go south on SR 43 (away from the park-trust me this is correct) for a very short distance and then turn left onto Burnett Road. Burnett Road will “T” into 9th Street. Go right on 9th Street to Swisher Road which will be a hard left immediately after the Veterinary Office. Once on Swisher Road you will cross back under the interstate and find the Park Gatehouse directly ahead. Look for the farm homestead on your right.
