Battle Ground, Indiana will be the corn husking capital of Indiana on Saturday, October 4, as The Farm at Prophetstown will host the 2014 Indiana State Corn Husking Contest. The farm is located within Indiana’s newest state park: Prophetstown State Park. Prophetstown is located where the Tippecanoe River meets the Wabash River near the town of Battle Ground.
The Indiana State Hand Corn Husking Contest will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This contest is open to all who enjoy old-fashioned corn husking. Participants in the timed contest, husk corn from one row, throwing the ears into a horse-drawn wagon. The corn is then weighed and inspected for excess husks. Classes vary from 10 to 20 minutes.
The contests are open to both men and women of various age groups, from youth to golden agers. Team husking is a new event; four members husking for 5 minutes each. The cost is $15 per person; spectators will be admitted at no charge.
The Farm at Prophetstown is located in the Prophetstown State Park. Driving Directions: Take I-65 to exit number 178 which is State Road 43, go south on SR 43 (away from the park – trust me this is correct) for a very short distance and then turn left onto Burnett Road. Burnett Road will “T” into 9th Street. Go right on 9th Street to Swisher Road which will be a hard left immediately after the Veterinary Office. Once on Swisher Road you will cross back under the interstate and find the Park Gatehouse directly ahead. Look for the farm homestead on your right.
