A drama of great tenderness, charm, and beauty, The Glass Menagerie is one of the most famous plays of the modern theatre. Amanda Wingfield is a faded Southern belle, living with her two grown children in a small apartment in St. Louis. Amanda dreams of a better life for her painfully shy daughter, Laura, and so she pushes her son, Tom to find a “gentleman caller” for his sister. Tom, dreaming of an escape from his oppressive life, agrees, and the arrival of the gentleman caller sends shockwaves through the family, shattering the delicate fantasies that have kept them going.
The Glass Menagerie was previously produced at IPFW in July 1973 and October 1995.
In commemorating IPFW’s 50th Celebration, the Department of Theatre looks back at some past favorites and looks forward to new horizons. This season we present four productions that embrace the concepts of memory, dreams, and self-realization, along with a bonus fifth production: a new staging of The Imaginary Invalid, the very first play produced at IPFW.
