A Lesson Before Dying
by: Romulus Linney, from the novel by Ernest J. Grimes
directed by: Thom Hofrichter
In 1948 backwoods Louisiana, an innocent black man is convicted of killing a white store owner and is sentenced to die. Because his attorney attempts to mitigate his sentence by arguing he only has the sense of a hog, the man decides to behave like one. A local schoolteacher tries to convince him he is a man, not an animal. As a result, they both regain their dignity as men. This celebrated novel's wrenching power lies in the grace the characters muster as their defense against being treated as less than human.
