FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Time to meet another Angel Among Us. This time, it's Judy Applegate of Fort Wayne.
Judy is powerful. Just ask people who know and love her.
Judy knows how to lead people.
Her daughter, Tammy Borchers, a fifth grade teacher at Maplewood Elementary School in Fort Wayne, nominated Judy for Angel.
In times of budget cuts and a tough economy, Judy quietly organizes Maplewood's very own clothing bank, creates and sells gourmet pretzels, adopted a Maplewood family at Christmas and gathered sponsors so second graders could take a field trip to the zoo.
Tammy calls her mom faithful, generous and loving. Others agree.
Maplewood Case Manager, Ephraim Smiley, said, "What she does, she does without a sense of accepting something from someone. She does it like she's on a mission, and that's what floors me. It's any day and every day. Just talk to her. You'll understand."
Judy Applegate said, "If I can get anybody else involved, you know, I'm all about that. I was a student here years ago, and my children have gone here, too, and my daughter's now a teacher here. She tells me the stories from the kids, and it just touches my heart that they need something, and if I can do it, I'll try my best to get it done."
Tamara Borchers, "She'll tell you that she did not do it alone, but she has an amazing network of friends and family that are so willing to give to her, that she's the instrumental piece in why it all happens and the angel among everybody that helps her out, I really believe."
Judy and her family make it a point to give to others every holiday season. It's a beautiful lesson for all of us.
Judy says she doesn't mind the attention... as long as she inspires others!
