FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Volunteers often mean so much to people who run non-profit organizations.
The folks at Lutheran Social Services in Fort Wayne agree that Jackie Heckler is an Angel Among Us.
Jackie's volunteered for 22 years, signing up to help back when her late husband served several years on the board.
Lutheran Social Services helps people in need attain social, emotional and spiritual wholeness through nearly ten programs.
Staff members say they couldn't do it without Jackie.
Annie Miller nominated Jackie. She said, "Jackie is very consistent in showing up every Wednesday. We know that she'll come in, grab a cup of decaf coffee, sit down with a smile, and she's willing to go wherever. We're a small agency, and we have a lot of staff, so sometimes we have to move Jackie from one room to another, and she's just patient. She just goes with the flow, and she just does what we need her to do. She picks up on things very quickly which is very helpful to us. The other thing is she's just very kind."
Jackie Heckler said, "I love office work. From the time I was a little girl, I've always wanted to do things in an office. Any kind of office machine, I've loved. Everyone seems to be so caring about what they do. They're just very involved. Certainly it's no secret that the pay is not that great compared to corporate. But, they are just dedicated people. I guess the bottom line is what we were taught from little on, do unto others."
The folks at Lutheran Social Services hope Jackie can inspire new volunteers there.
Lutheran Social Services is involved in the Pepsi Refresh Project. The organization's teen pregnancy program called Echo is in the running for a major grant.
Nationally, teen parents only have a 40 percent chance to graduate high school. Echo has a 90 percent success rate.
You can go to the Pepsi Refresh website and vote.
And, please keep those Angel nominations coming!
