NEW HAVEN, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- When some people retire, they take it easy and deserve to do so. But others like the down time.
When Don Springer of New Haven retired seven years ago. after 35 years at Verizon, he spent two and a half weeks with down time and said, nope!
So, he went back to his old school, Central Lutheran, to volunteer.
And, that's what he does every afternoon!
He first tutored students and even substitute taught.
Now, he changes lightbulbs, works on the A-V system, the heating and cooling and takes great pride in his always clean gym floor!
Don takes even more pride in his family who was there when yours truly and the entire staff and student body at Central Lutheran celebrated the Angel Among Us recognition.
Norm McNally, Central Lutheran Principal, said, "He saves the day for us... saves not only money for the school, but he saves us being able to be able to operate every day."
Don Springer, Angel Among Us, said, "My dad was a maintenance man, and in the summers, I used to work with him when I went to school, so obviously, I picked something up."
Dawn Schuller, Enrollment Manager, said, "He would, I think, do anything for any of our kids here. They really love him, they do. It gives them a good role model. They see how he serves, and how he lives his Faith, and that's what we need more of."
Springer said, "There's three things in this life. There's God, and there's family, and there's Central Lutheran School. And, I thank God every day for giving me Central Lutheran School and giving me the opportunity to help them here."
Don has a grandson and granddaughter who attend Central Lutheran, and he loves getting to see them every day. He told me there's nothing like having family around.
And, he was truly surprised! Mrs. Schuller and Mr. McNally were just thrilled to pull off the surprise!
When he saw Brian walk into the gym with a camera, he thought, oh, a parent's come in to tape something.
Then, Mr. McNally and I spilled the beans!
