FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Marty Stilabower is 75 years young and works at A Day Away Adult Daycare, a place that specializes in Alzheimer's and dementia care.
Director of family and client services, Becky Armstead, nominated Marty. She and Marty's daughter founded the facility several years ago. Becky calls Marty their inspiration.
Marty is known for her love of children, being just as rambunctious as they are! She appreciates high school volunteers at A Day Away because she says they help bridge a generation gap.
Marty reads the daily news to the clients and helps with fundraisers and is perhaps best-loved for her cooking. Her specialty? Baked chicken salad... ever careful of her friends' dietary needs.
Becky Armstead said, "She's very conscious about that, making sure we don't serve certain things because it's harder for them to eat."
Marty Stilabower said, "I love to cook, and that was just by a fluke because when they got the kitchen, nobody else could cook, ha ha!"
Becky added, "I just think she's a very special person and when I say that, I mean she always puts everybody else above her own self."
Marty shared, "These people are the angels because they're really neat people. They're just so sweet. The caregivers especially try so hard in what they have to do to get these people here and to care for them is unbelievable."
Marty is on the staff but says she'd volunteer there every day if she wasn't. She loves her friends and co-workers and has an appreciation for what she calls a secure, home-like atmosphere at A Day Away.
