FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - This month's Angel Among us is from Noble County... a woman who stepped up when her community needed her.
When Kendallville's mayor and United Way leaders pitched the idea of Community Table to help feed the hungry, Rhonda Kondas didn't bat an eye.
Kendallville has been hit hard by the recession, and since the program began a year ago, Rhonda and her team of volunteers from organizations and churches have served nearly 19,000 meals.
All ages go to the Trinity United Methodist Church on Monday and Thursday nights.
When the executive director of the Noble County United Way saw the Angels Among Us icon on our website, she knew exactly who to nominate.
Kristen Johnson says, "She's just a very special person. That's a huge burden to take on, and Rhonda said, oh, I'll do it. I'll plan the meals, I'll cook the meals. I'll coordinate the volunteers, and that's exactly what she does."
Rhonda Kondas says, "We felt the need to reach out and help our community with feeding them, and we have a resource table also where they can go and find resources on jobs, taxes, all different kinds of stuff. It's very humbling to be able to help my community. This is something that I've wanted to do for years and didn't really know how to. I'm very proud. It's a good community."
Kristen says Rhonda puts in 20 to 25 volunteer hours every week, and she's much more comfortable working in the background. She says she's proud of her community and the people who live there.
We encourage all of our viewers to nominate an Angel among them.
