This month's Angel Among Us has spent nearly four decades at the Anthis Career Center in Fort Wayne.
Co-worker, Nikki Craig nominated Velvet Brooks. Velvet is a media assistant. She says her time in education has never been a job.
She works with special education students in the IT and Health Departments.
Velvet also works with several non-profit agencies and is deeply involved with her church and family.
She credits her mom for teaching her the importance of giving and never expects any recognition.
The people around her appreciate her outgoing, gentle touch.
Nikki Craig said, "Students who are struggling to have clothing to wear to school, maybe they are living in a car. There's just phenomenal stories out there, and sometimes our students are in that situation. Perhaps they don't want to admit it to their teacher that they're having problems, but they'll talk with Velvet."
Velvet Brooks said, "That's always been a passion of mine, the underdog. All of 'em in this building, they're just fantastic. I couldn't have done it for this long if I didn't enjoy what I did. I just want to do what I do, work with the kids, see what their needs are."
Nikki Craig said, "I know everybody out there, they meet people in their daily walk, people who do good things. Sometimes you just need to say thank you or you know, I really appreciate that you always have a smile."
A big reception was held for Velvet's Angel nomination.
Nikki's known her for five and a half years and always calls her an angel, so this is fitting.
By the way, Miss Brooks has no immediate plans to retire.
Viewers, please keep those nominations coming!
