FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Leo Pech says language empowers.
That's why he volunteers so much of his time with the local English Learning Program, teaching adults and children in our Spanish speaking community.
Leo says he does it so children can do well in school and in life and so adults can feel independent and communicate well with teachers, doctors and others.
He says the real angels, though, are the ELP staff members who work so hard, and he just can't believe he was nominated.
Leo said, "I believe that somebody helped me before so in return I just truly believe that we should help. For me it's just amazing to see how we take some adult students from level one ESL and when they're at level four they don't need me anymore!"
Maureen Trentadue, who nominated Leo, said, "He works with the children and the parents, the family as a whole. He really makes sure that he incorporates all of that to help improve their lives and to give them the benefits they need to succeed here."
Maureen and Leo know each other through the parent-teacher association at Northcrest Elementary School.
Unfortunately, Leo's job assisting the children and parents at that school was eliminated, but Leo says he'll continue volunteering with those families and with others. He has three boys of his own and says he wants a strong future for all children in this community.
I hope others in our community will log on to our website to nominate an angel like Leo!
