AVILLA, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--Just after sunrise in Avilla Indiana and Larry Goldsmith has already combed goodies from of his fabulous garden, irrigated by an 11-hundred gallon rainwater tank.

“When we had that dry spell this past summer when everybody’s garden was all wilting” Larry says, “I was watering everyday with rainwater.”

The fresh veggies are destined for the dinner table, but not Larry’s dinner table. They are key ingredients in the success of his real line of work…Magpies Pizza, the freshest pizza you will find anywhere in ‘Your Country’. Larry’s been selling pizza in Avilla for twenty years. He just renamed the business Magpie’s for his daughter Maggie. And though Larry’s insistence on garden fresh quality means slightly higher prices the customers are willing to pay them, coming from as far away as Ohio and Michigan just to eat at magpies.

“I’m not paid by the hour, I’m paid for quality,” Larry says. “Every small business owner if you’ve been in business you’re paid for quality there’s no such thing as getting an hourly wage. If you start thinking that way you’re in the wrong business.”

Larry’s pretty active in the local community, he sent pizza’s to the troops in Iraq a few years ago. And his grandfather was a survived the sinking of the Titanic…Larry lectures locally on the subject. But it’s the pizza that has made the Goldsmith name in these parts…the garden, the restaurant, all that fresh taste. It’s a quality little niche in life that Larry Goldsmith has carved out for himself.

“It’s like a suit of clothes you really think you look good in,” Larry says, “It’s me!”
