CLAYPOOL, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--Most days you’ll find Sue Baker at her Claypool home focusing on domestic duties. But once the house is clean, Sue Baker goes to work. Baker writes children’s books. She never dreamed she’d be a published author, but when a special kitten came in to her life five years ago, she was inspired to share her story with the world.

“She was at the end of the line,” Baker says, “and she was the smallest in the story and she can’t keep up.”

Baker has just published her first book, “Scooter, The Little Black Kitty with the White Spot”, About a kitten, the smallest in the litter, who get separated from her family in the woods, finds a house with a light on and discovers the blonde lady who lives inside. The story is about the bond that forms between the two. The book is based on Sue Baker’s real life cat, Scooter, who came in to Sue’s life just the way it happens in the book.

“When she was with us she would follow us around. She had such a bond with us,” Baker says. “We couldn’t leave a room without her following us.”

The publishing of her first book is a bittersweet triumph for Sue. Just two weeks ago Scooter got sick and died unexpectedly.

‘Oh it’s been terrible. It’s been traumatic. She inspired it and we definitely want everybody to remember her.”

That shouldn’t be hard to do. Sue plans four more books in the Scooter series, tackling such topics as mixed families and adoption, things many kids think about these days. And now, with a wise little black kitten to help them sort out the answers. Eric Olson reporting, out in ‘Your Country’.
