FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--Few local institutions have grown as quickly as Fort Wayne’s Indiana Tech Campus. lots of new buildings and a growing student body of tomorrow’s engineers and computer scientists. And in one corner of this handsome campus, real live cutting edge stuff is on the table. You’re looking at computer technology’s leading edge. This is a Microsoft Surface, a tabletop sized computer. There is no mouse and now keyboard. The surface is hands-on only. And Indiana Tech is one of just two universities’ in the state to have one.
The Microsoft surface is a case of hardware outpacing software; It’s so new that there aren’t many applications for it. And that’s what Brian Lewendowski’s computer engineering class is busy with, writing software programs that will mine the learning and research riches this machine promises.
“They have software that allows doctors to go in and perform heart surgery without actually performing heart surgery,” says junior Spencer Johnson..
And not just surgery. This computer can potentially simulate electronic circuitry, chemical reactions, molecular engineering, all with software programs yet to be written…programs these leaders of tomorrow are devising right now.
“I’m thrilled that we have the opportunity to let the students get their hands dirty with something like this some new piece of technology that really hasn’t hit the mainstream,” says instructor Brian Lewendowski. “It’s been talked about but it hasn’t really penetrated the marketplace just yet. So we have a chance to kind of be on the cutting edge and let our minds run free and see what we can develop with it.”
