FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--
Lynn: It’s so much fun to do something different from what I’ve been doing, so anything that’s different.

FORT WAYNE AUTHOR AN ILLUSTRATOR LYNN ROWE REED KNEW AS A CHILD EXACTLY WHAT SHE WANTED TO BE WHEN SHE GREW UP.

Lynn: There was a little pink cinderblock building in Garrett that we used to drive past all of the time and anytime we drove past that building I dreamed about that becoming my art studio.

REED NEVER MADE IT TO THAT PINK CINDERBLOCK BUILDING BUT SHE CERTAINLY MADE IT IN THE ART WORLD AND, EVEN TOUGHER TO DO, IN THE WORLD OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS. SHE HAS PUBLISHED 17 OF THEM, YES 17 CHILDREN’S BOOKS, BEGINNING WITH HER FIRST, RATTLESNAKE STEW, WHICH SHE WROTE AND ILLUSTRATED ON SPEC IN 1990 AND TOOK TO NEW YORK LOOKING FOR A PUBLISHER.

Lynn: And I walked around for one business week in New York and had 12 different publishers look at the story and art and my very last visit I was offered a contract for my first book.

SHE HAS WORKED NON-STOP EVER SINCE, HER ILLUSTRATIONS A PRIMITIVE STYLE THAT KIDS LOVE, HER STORIES SEEN FROM A CHILD’S POINT OF VIEW. ONE OF THEM, ‘PUNCTUATION TAKES A VACATION’ SEALED HER SUCCESS IN 2003 WHEN TEACHERS DISCOVERED IT, ORDERING THOUSANDS OF COPIES FOR THEIR CLASSROOMS. HER LATEST IS ‘ROSCOE AND THE PELICAN RESCUE’, ABOUT THE WILDLIFE THAT SUFFERED THROUGH LAST YEARS GULF OIL SPILL. ALWAYS LOOKING FOR CHANGE REED HAS BEGUN MIXING HER ILLUSTRATIONS WITH PHOTOS AND SCANNED OBJECTS.

Lynn: Like I bought bait at a bait store and took the worms home and put them on my scanner and scanned them.

DESPITE HER SUCCESS GETTING NEW WORK PUBLISHED IS STILL A STRUGGLE, ONE THAT REED ADMITS SHE’S GROWING TIRED OF. SHE SAYS SHE THINKING OF MAKING A CHANGE, WRITING A NOVEL PERHAPS, DOING SOMETHING ELSE CREATIVE THAT WILL KEEP HER CONTRIBUTING TO OTHER PEOPLE’S LIVES.

Lynn: It’s so much fun to do something different from what I’ve been doing. So anything that’s different.
