AUBURN, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--If you’ve followed Mitchell Kruse over the years you might not recognize him today. As CEO of Kruse International, the world’s largest collector car auction house, he rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, counted America’s wealthiest citizens among his friends, and reaped riches himself in the process. On the surface a very successful man. Beneath the surface though…far from content.
“I made a lot of foolish business choices, I didn’t treat people very well,” Kruse says today. “I was very self-centered. That’s kind of shocking to a kid that grows up going to church three times a week and thinks that he had it all figured out.”
Kruse’s path to self awareness is outlined in his new book, ‘Restoration Road: A Journey Back to the Way Things were Meant to Be’, the story of his recommitment to his Christian faith and how he thinks others can profit from his journey. In the book Kruse says the low point in his life came July 1st, 1992 when IRS agents raided the company’s corporate headquarters in Auburn on money laundering charges that were later dropped.
“I thought it would be the straw that broke the proverbial camels back,” he says, “that the attorney’s fees alone would put us out of business.”
Kruse says that night he committed his life to God and began the hard work of restoring his life. He has since left the auction business, earned a doctorate degree in theology and is designing a ministry that will help spread his gospel of spiritual restoration, lessons he says that would serve the business community well.
“Maybe a reader is a business owner and he’s going to reevaluate how he’s treating people, relationships, as the money comes in,” he says. “Am I hooked up with any charitable organizations am I aligning my efforts with one where I can make a really big impact.”
As to where he sees himself in five or ten years: “I would hope it’s continuing to communicate the message of restoration and wisdom. That’s going to be through writing, teaching, preaching, and just see what God does with that.”
