FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--BEN HUR BY HOOSIER WRITER LEW WALLACE WASN’T A GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL BUT IT WAS A GOOD ONE AND LOOKED GREAT ON THE BIG SCREEN…THIS IS A PAGE FROM THAT NOVEL IN WALLACE’S OWN HAND, TAKEN FROM THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT. ‘THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW’ WAS A GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL, THE FIRST AMERICAN NOVEL RECOGNIZED AS GREAT BY SNOOTY EUROPEAN WRITERS. IT TOO LOOKED WONDERFUL ON THE BIG SCREE…EVEN WHEN THE TREATMENT WAS LESS THAN SERIOUS. THIS IS A PAGE IN WASHINGTON IRVING’S OWN HAND TAKEN FROM THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT WRITTEN IN 1820. THESE PAPER GEMS ARE PART OF A PRICELESS EXHIBIT AT FORT WAYNE’S KARPELES MANUSCRIPT MUSEUM THAT FOCUSES ON AMERICAN AUTHORS AND THE EXHIBIT READS LIKE A WHO’S WHO IN AMERICAN LITERATURE…ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT PAGES, ALL IN LONG HAND, FROM UNCLE TOM’S CABIN, LOUISA MAY ALCOT’S ‘LITTLE WOMEN’…HERMAN MELVILLE, MARK TWAIN, JAMES FENIMOR COOPER…EVEN A PAGE, WITH CORRECTIONS, FROM DANIEL WEBSTER’S FIRST DICTIONARY. YES, EVEN WEBSTER REWROTE. MANY OF US GREW UP WITH THESE STORIES…THEY INSPIRED MOST IF NOT ALL OF AMERICA’S GREAT WRITERS EVER SINCE. AND TO SEE THESE PAGES IN PERSON IS TO TOUCH THOSE LITERARY GIANTS IN A WAY YOU CAN’T JUST BY READING THE FINISHED BOOKS. HERE YOU SEE THE CREATIVE PROCESS IN ACTION WITH ALL ITS CROSSOUTS AND MARGIN NOTES..WITH ALL THE STRUGGLE IT TAKES TO WRITE WELL SPILLED OUT ONTO THE PAGE. IT’S A PRIVILEDGED PEEK INTO USUALLY HIDDEN WORLD, AND IT’S A PRIVILEDGE TO HAVE IT HERE IN FORT WAYNE INDIANA. ERIC OLSON REPORTING OUT IN YOUR COUNTRY.
