FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--Bob: Our whole thing is to get bats back out doing what they’re supposed to.

WELCOME TO THE WALTON RESIDENCE…

Bob: Wally came from what, Wal-Mart. he was found lying on the sidewalk at Wal-Mart. Come here Wally.

IT’S THE HOME OF BOB AND ANN WALTON…

Bob: This is Ewing and he came from Ewing Street he’s a big brown bat, he’s a young bat.

…AND HOME, AT TIMES, TO UP TO TWO HUNDRED BATS…SOME WITH BROKEN WINGS..

Bob: This is Petey she came to us a few years back…see how her one wing doesn’t extend itself?

OTHERS, RESCUED FROM HOMES AND BEING FATTENED UP AND READIED FOR RELEASE. BOB AND ANN WALTON HAVE DEVOTED THEIR RETIREMENT YEARS TO RESCUIING ARGUABLY THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD MAMMELS ON EARTH, NURSING INJURED ONES BACK TO HEALTH AND RELEASING THEM BACK INTO THE WILD.

Bob: They’re extremely beneficial to humans, they do a lot of good they eat bugs, not only the ones that irritate us but the ones that go after our crops.

Ann: They’re so trusting and they are so different personalities from what they’re made out to be and that is the thing that has gotten to me.

Bob: This is Ariel…and she only has one wing and she has a real sweet face like a little bear.

THE WALTONS ALSO TAKE THEIR LITTLE FRIENDS INTO LOCAL SCHOOLS, CHURCHES AND NURSING HOMES, SPREADING THE WORD THAT THESE LITTLE CREATURES DESERVE THEIR RUNG ON NATURE’S LADDER.

Bob: And she goes to sleep there and so we’ll do a school program with the kids and usually one kid says where’s the live bat? And when I show ‘em the reaction is really fun.

INSTEAD OF KICKING BACK IN RETIREMENT THE WALTON’S ARE FIGHTING TO SAVE A SMALL CORNER OF NATURE AND OUR PLANET, BATTLING IGNORANCE AND PREJIDUCE…TEACHING BY EXAMPLE. THERE APPEARS TO BE ONLY ONE DOWNSIDE…

Bob: All the batman jokes how do you stand that? I love them; in fact part of my program has me dashing for the bat mobile.
