WATERLOO, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--George: When I was about five I just had a passion for making movies. When I was about seven I bought my first little film camcorder..little eight mm film camcorder..and just made movies with my brother.
WHEN HE GREW UP LIFE GOT IN THE WAY OF MOVIE MAKING FOR GEORGE JOHNSON..MARRIAGE, FOUR KIDS, A JOB. BUT WHEN THE ECONOMY TANKED A YEAR AGO AND GEORGE LOST HIS JOB, LIFE TOOK A HOLLYWOOD-LIKE TURN.
George: Then my wife said ‘Hey you could be down or use this time to write. So we thought well, let’s come up with a story….bring some hope to those struggling with the economy.
THE STORY GEORGE JOHNSON CAME UP WITH IS ‘HOMELESS FOR THE HOLIDAYS’, ABOUT A CORPORATE EXEC. WHO LOSES HIS HIGH PAYING JOB AND HAS TO SELL BURGERS TO MAKE ENDS MEET. GEORGE PUT UP THE MONEY TO SHOOT THE MOVIE, HELD OPEN AUDITIONS IN AUBURN AND CAST THE FILM WITH MOSTLY LOCAL ACTORS. ‘HOMELESS FOR THE HOLIDAYS’ IS SOMETHING OF A COMMUNITY PROJECT.
George: I’ve always encouraged people to think outside the box. I’ve learned since then there’s no such things as boxes except for those created by fearful imaginations.
GEORGE SHOT THE FILM ON WEEKENDS…MOST OF HIS CAST WORKED WEEKDAYS..AND EDITED THE STORY IN HIS BASEMENT. THE FIVE YEAR OLD WITH THE WINDUP 8 MILLIMETER CAMARA WAS BACK IN HIS ELEMENT.
George: I love stories, I love good stories. I love stories that when you’re done when you walk away from the theatre you feel good about life and you have maybe a new perspective, you’re able to grow a little.
‘HOMELESS FOR THE HOLIDAYS’ OPENS NEXT MONTH IN AUBURN AND FORT WAYNE..A TIMELY RELEASE, GEORGE SAYS, GIVEN THE FEAR AND APPREHENSION MANY OF US LIVE WITH THESE DAYS ABOUT OUR FUTURES.
George: I would hope people will come out of the theatre inspired and looking at life differently. And this offers an alternative way to see life, how we treat other people and the importance of things.
