WABASH, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--ABRAHAM LINCOLN NEVER CAME TO WABASH INDIANA BUT HIS PRESENCE IS A CONSTANT HERE..A FINE STATUE OF LINCOLN ON THE COURTHOUSE SQUARE HAS GREETED VISITORS FOR DECADES. AND ON THIS 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH, THE GREAT MAN IS MAKING A SECOND APPEARANCE IN WABASH.
Tracy: I think you could leave here feeling like you knew Lincoln personally. I think you feel like you were standing there with him.
YOU CAN’T STAND WITH HIM BUT YOU CAN STAND AMONG SOME OF THE FINEST PORTRAITS AND SCULPTURES EVER CREATED OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN. THEY’RE FROM THE ROBERT LANG COLLECTION OF LINCOLN ARTWORKS, NOW ON DISPLAY AT THE WABASH COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM. MANY OF THESE WORKS ARE FAMILIAR TO THE LINCOLNPHILE, LIKE THIS PORTRAIT OF LINCOLN READING TO HIS SON TAD..A PAINTING BY FRANKLIN COURTER FROM A FAMOUS MATTHEW BRADY PHOTOGRAPH. OR THIS BUST BY LEONARD VOLK, PRESENTING LINCOLN AS ROMAN SENATOR. THE FACE IS FROM A PLASTER LIFE MASK OF LINCOLN MADE BY VOLK…THIS IS EXACTLY HOW LINCOLN LOOKED. THIS LARGE PORTRAIT HUNG IN THE WHITE HOUSE WHEN RUTHERFORD B. HAYES WAS PRESIDENT. THE PAINTING GOT LOST AND REAPPEARED DECADES LATER IN A GARAGE SALE. IT SOLD FOR FIFTY CENTS. EACH OF THESE WORKS HAS A STORY TO TELL, AND THEY ADD UP TO AN EXHIBIT THE LIKES OF WHICH ARE RARELY SEEN ANYWHERE.
Tracy: It also gives us the cache of being a museum that has a major Lincoln exhibit in it, this year especially. And can help us down the line to bring other big shows in.
THERE ARE OTHER LINCOLN AND CIVIL WAR PIECES HERE. THIS TABLE WAS USED AT APPOMATTOX DURING LEE’S SURRENDER TO GENERAL GRANT. BUT THIS IS THE REAL DRAW, THE MIND AND MYSTIQUE OF THIS MAN WHOM WE AMERICANS CAN’T SEEM TO GET ENOUGH OF…A MAN WE PROUDLY HOLD UP AS AMERICA’S GREATEST CONTRIBUTION TO HUMANITY.
