FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--IF YOU DRIVE AN AUTOMOBILE, ANY MAKE, ANY MODEL…YOUR LIFE HAS BEEN TOUCHED BY THIS MAN. IN 1927 AT THE TENDER AGE OF THIRTY, ERRET LOBAN CORD CAME TO AUBURN INDIANA…TOOK THE REINS OF THE BANKRUPT AUBURN AUTOMOBILE COMPANY…HIRED BRILLIANT YOUNG DESIGNERS, LAUNCHED A MASSIVE MARKETING CAMPAIGN AND BROUGHT THE STRUGGLING COMPANY BACK FROM THE BRINK.

Gran: He literally came in and took a dying car company and made it a major force in the automobile industry.

OVERNIGHT THE KID FROM INDIANA BECAME THE DARLING OF AMERICAN INDUSTRY. HE CEMENTED THAT REPUTATION IN NOVEMBER 1935 WHEN HIS NEWEST PROJECT, THE CORD 810, WAS UNVEILED AT THE NEW YORK AUTO SHOW. IT WAS UNLIKE ANYTHING ANYONE HAD EVER SEEN…AND NOT JUST A STYLING SENSATION. THE 810 SPORTED THIRTY TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGHS, LIKE FRONT WHEEL DRIVE, THAT WOULD BECOME STANDARD ON ALL MODERN CARS.

Gran: Retractable headlights…also, used unibody construction which wasn’t used that much yet in American passenger cars.

NOW E. L. CORD’S BRAINCHILD HAS COME FULL CIRCLE. THE AUBURN CORD DEUSENBERG MUSEUM HAS JUST BEEN GIVEN THIS 1937 CORD 812 BEVERLY SEDAN. THIS WAS E. L.’S PERSONAL CAR. IT REMAINED IN THE CORD FAMILY FOR SEVENTY YEARS, AND WAS PRESENTED TO THE MUSEUM BY THEM IN HONOR OF THEIR FAMOUS PATRIARCH.

Gran: The design itself for this car took place upstairs in the former Auburn Automobile Company’s design studios so it literally came to life here. It’s back in Indiana for the first time in many years and it’s literally at home.

NOW ONE OF MANY PIECES OF ROLLING SCULPTURE AT THE ACD MUSEUM…BUT A FAMILY FAVORITE, OF THE MAN WHO STARTED IT ALL. ERIC OLSON OUT IN YOUR COUNTRY.
