FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)-AT CHUCK SAWYERS LAGRANGE COUNTY HOME THE ANCIENT GAME OF CHESS IS A FAMILY AFFAIR.
Chuck: Now Vince take it easy on him.
CHUCK’S FIVE BOYS ALL PLAY THE GAME AND THE FAMILY REGULARLY ATTENDS CHESS TOURNEMENTS AROUND THE MIDWEST. BUT CHUCK SAWYER ISN’T CONTENT JUST TO PLAY THE GAME OF CHESS…
Chuck: My earliest memory was probably five years old and I grabbed a chunk of wood out of the firewood and started carving a little boat.
WITH THAT LITTLE BOAT CHUCK LAUNCHED A LIFELONG LOVE OF WOODWORKING. AND AT ONE POINT HIS TWO PASSIONS, CHESS AND WOODWORKING, CROSSED PATHS.
Chuck: I wanted to buy my own chess table and I started comparing prices and it was way out of my range and I thought man, I bet I can build one of those you know. The first one wasn’t beautiful but it worked, I could play chess on it.
SINCE THE CHUCK HAS BEEN CRAFTING EXQUISITE CHESS TABLES IN HIS BASEMENT FROM FINE WOODS, CURLY MAPLE, MAHOGENY, EXOTIC WOODS TOO, LIKE BOLIVIAN ROSEWOOD. AND HE SELLS THEM AS QUICK AS HE CAN MAKE THEM. THIS TABLE WAS BOUGHT BY THE HIGHEST RATED NATIONAL CHESS MASTER IN THE STATE OF INDIANA, QUITE A FEATHER IN CHUCK SAWYER’S CAP. HE SAYS THE QUALITY OF HIS TABLES IMPROVES WITH EACH ONE HE MAKES. CHUCK SAYS HE HOPES SOMEDAY TO QUIT HIS DAY JOB REPAIRING BOATS AND DO WHAT HE REALLY LOVES TO DO.
Chuck”\: I’ve got so many designs in mind. Next five years maybe I can do this full time. Dad always said pick a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.
