FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter)--Greg: I'll start off by drawing a pattern and we'll just go from there…
YOU GET A HINT OF WHAT GOES ON IN GREG SUMMERS FREMONT GARAGE BY THE CRITTERS THAT SURROUND HIM..
Greg: And it's kind of a generic pan fish or sunfish or bluegill..
GREG'S A RETIRED INDUSTRIAL ARTS TEACHER..HE TAUGHT HIGH SCHOOL SHOP IN CHURUBUSCO AND FREMONT. AND WHILE THE TEACHER CAN RETIRE, APPARENTLY THE ARTIST IN THAT TEACHER WORKS ON.
Greg: I do large insects I do little creative bugs, little figures…but I just kept coming back to fish.
AS A TEACHER GREG ALWAYS HAD HIS STUDENTS DO SOMETHING CREATIVE WITH METAL…MORE SCULPTURE THAN SHOP CLASS. EVENTUALLY HIS CREATIVE SIDE GOT THE BETTER OF HIM AND HE LEFT THE CLASSROOM TO TAKE UP ART. NOW HE SPENDS HIS DAYS MANIPULATING RAW IRON AND STEEL INTO SOME OF NATURES GENTLIST CREATURES. HE SAYS RETIREMENT'S HARDER WORK THAN WORK EVER WAS.
Greg: People keep saying 'well you're retired' well I just changed jobs you know. I'm gonna heat this to bring out some color in it.
GREG CREATES THINGS OTHER THAN FISH, WHIMSICAL CREATURES OR GRACEFUL FLOWERS AND PLANT SHAPES. BUT HE ALWAYS RETURNS TO THE SCALEY CRITTERS. GREG'S A PISCES THOUGH HE INSISTS THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. WHATEVER THE CASE HIS ART, AND GETTING IT SEEN, NOW CONSUMES ALL HIS TIME.
Greg: I've sold some things nationally I've gone ebay and different things like that and I just would like to get my stuff out, all over.
A POET ONCE SAID AN EDUCATOR IS ONE WHO MAKES HARD THINGS EASY. GREG SUMMERS IS STILL DOING THAT, AND DOING IT BEAUTIFULLY, OUT IN YOUR COUNTRY. THIS IS ERIC OLSON REPORTING
